Geo Caching at Small Hope Bay Lodge

Long time guest Nick has helped Small Hope Bay Lodge enter a world of high tech intrigue -- geo caching. Geo caching is a fun and high tech treasure hunt using GPS technology. The hider of the cache takes a container and hides in it a log and maybe some goodies and then mark the location of the cache with their GPS. They then post the coordinates and maybe some hints and encrypted clues on sites like geocaching.com for others to download so they can go search for the treasure.

Nick created the first caches on Andros a couple of years ago and this year, he has trained us to do caches of our own. You can find the coordinates for one of our caches and get more information on Geocaching here.

Shark Souvenirs

Vince and Becky Hoffman were excited to go on SHBL's Shark Observation Dive for two reasons: SHARKS and Becky wanted to find a shark's tooth to add to her necklace, where she carries reminders of her dive trip. They found not one, but two teeth to take home as souvenirs for their Bahamas diving vacation.

And they saw sharks! Pin It Now!

Dana Harding Maxwell - Forever at Home

Dick Birch, the founder of Small Hope Bay Lodge, always said Small Hope was a way of life. SHBL becomes a home and a family for most of the people that pass through our little Lodge. Dana Maxwell, a long time guest and member of the extended Small Hope family, passed away this past November. His will specified that his remains be buried at sea by his family at Small Hope. Dana had his final wishes carried out by joining Dick Birch and other members of the Birch and Small Hope family in being released over the wall, having the Tongue of the Ocean as his final resting place.

Jeff and Mike, who had been diving with Dana for years, through his good times and bad, took Dana's ashes on their last dive, taking the biodegradable box that held Dana's ashes to 160 feet over the wall at Dana's Delight, the site named in his honor years ago, and released him into the abyss. They then placed a plaque in memorial on a ledge at 160 feet.

Dana's lifelong friends, Ernie and Judy, accompanied Dana on his final trip to the Bahamas and Ernie wrote a poem that he read at Dana's Memorial. You can hear that at the end of the video.

Dana Maxwell was a wonderful friend, a funny man who was dedicated to the Lodge and his two prized puppies. His wit and irreverent attitude embodied an eclectic and eccentric spirit that made him a favorite character at SHBL. He is loved and will be missed. Pin It Now!

Love At Small Hope Bay Lodge

It was a lovely day at Small Hope Bay Lodge on May 2 and guest Greg decided to take advantage of great conditions and conspired with the dive staff to propose marriage to his girlfriend, Amber. Greg had come prepared with a treasure chest complete with a treasure "map" that spoke of their life together, some pirate booty of necklaces, beads and a gorgeous diamond engagement ring.

After Amber, Greg and the other guests started their dive to go Over The Wall to 185 feet, Divemaster Amanda smuggled the precious treasure down to 90 feet and hid it under a coral head. With the stage set, all that was left was for Amber to find her treasure. She came upon the chest as she and Greg were making their way back to the anchor line and after reading the "map", Greg pulled out the ring. Amber snagged it and put it on her finger, which we all took as a resounding YES!

Congratulations to the newly engaged couple. May you have a fruitful and happy life together!
